A Save Soil Europe campaign

Healthy Soil, Healthy Future

Europe is deciding how it will fund farming for the next six years. Let's make sure that funding helps farmers heal the soil beneath our feet.

Farmland soil, healthy and cared for

Why soil, why now

Across Europe, most of our soil is in poor health — worn down by decades of intensive farming, drought and neglect.

When soil struggles, so do we. Harvests become less reliable. Food supplies become more fragile.

The good news is that we can reverse it! This campaign is about making sure Europe's biggest farming budget actually rewards farmers for doing exactly that.

"60–70% of soils in the EU are currently in an unhealthy state."

— European Commission

Two big EU legislations that need to talk to each other

You may have heard of the Soil Monitoring Law — Europe's first law dedicated to monitoring the health of its soil.

In addition there is also the Common Agricultural Policy, or 'the CAP' — one of the largest budgets in the entire EU, worth hundreds of billions of euros, paid out to farmers every year.

The challenge: right now, these two are aligned in a limited way. Europe has a way to measure soil health, and a huge budget that could reward farmers for improving it — but the two aren't yet properly connected.

We think that's an opportunity for improvement, and with the next CAP being negotiated right now, for the upcoming period of 2028–2034, this is the moment to fix it!

What we're asking for

We're calling on the EU to reward farmers for real, measurable improvements to soil health — using the Soil Monitoring Law as the shared way of measuring what's working.

Put simply: farmers who improve their soil should be recognised and rewarded for it. And the cost of proving that improvement should never fall on the farmer.

Add your name

"I support EU action to reward farmers for improving soil health. Healthy soil means more nutritious food, more resilient harvests, and a fairer cost of living for families across Europe — now and for future generations. The Common Agricultural Policy and the Soil Monitoring Law should work together, so that farming funding supports real, measurable improvements to our soil, and makes the transition fair for farmers."

Where your signature goes

At the end of August, we'll hand the first wave of signatures to national government representatives in Brussels, ahead of EU Council discussions on the next CAP in early September.

In mid-September, when the European Parliament returns, we'll deliver to the Members of Parliament shaping the CAP — at the exact point where they decide which changes make it into the final text.

We'll keep collecting throughout, because negotiations continue into the autumn. You can follow how many people have joined right here on this page.
