Το φτωχό έδαφος οδηγεί σε φτωχή διατροφική αξία. Τα σημερινά φρούτα και λαχανικά περιέχουν ήδη 90% λιγότερα θρεπτικά συστατικά.
2 δισεκατομμύρια άνθρωποι υποφέρουν από διατροφικές ελλείψεις που οδηγούν σε πληθώρα ασθενειών.
Λειψυδρία
Τα απεμπλουτισμένα εδάφη δεν μπορούν να απορροφήσουν και να ρυθμίσουν την απορροή του νερού.
Η έλλειψη κατακράτησης νερού οδηγεί σε λειψυδρία, ξηρασίες και πλημμύρες.
Η οργανική ύλη μπορεί να συγκρατήσει έως και το 90% του βάρους της σε νερό και να το απελευθερώσει αργά στη διάρκεια του χρόνου. Αυτό είναι μια μεγάλη βοήθεια σε περιοχές που είναι επιρρεπείς στην ξηρασία.
Απώλεια Βιοποικιλότητας
Οι επιστήμονες λένε ότι περίπου 27000 είδη μορφών ζωής εξαφανίζονται κάθε χρόνο λόγω της απώλειας των βιοτόπων τους.
Η κρίση έχει φτάσει σε σημείο όπου το 80% της βιομάζας των εντόμων έχει εξαφανιστεί.
Η απώλεια της βιοποικιλότητας διαταράσσει περαιτέρω τον βιότοπο του εδάφους και εμποδίζει την αναγέννηση του εδάφους.
Κλιματική Αλλαγή
Ο άνθρακας που αποθηκεύεται στο έδαφος είναι 3 φορές περισσότερος από εκείνον στα ζωντανά φυτά και 2 φορές από εκείνον της ατμόσφαιρας, πράγμα που σημαίνει ότι το έδαφος παίζει ζωτικό ρόλο για τη δέσμευση του άνθρακα.
Εάν τα εδάφη του κόσμου δεν αναζωογονηθούν, μπορεί να απελευθερώσουν 850 δισεκατομμύρια τόνους διοξειδίου του άνθρακα στην ατμόσφαιρα. Αυτό είναι μια ποσότητα μεγαλύτερη από εκείνη όλων των εκπομπών αερίων της ανθρωπότητας τα τελευταία 30 χρόνια μαζί.

To try to improve matters, a popular Indian guru called Sadhguru is continuing to lead a global campaign called SaveSoil, which pushes to improve soil health around the world. He is calling for farmers to be given incentives, such as financial support, to keep a minimum of 3% of organic content in their soil.
