A farmer's success story with Cauvery Calling. Discover how intercropping timber trees not only boosted income but also rejuvenated the soil and water table for this Sivagangai farmer.

Beyond Coconut: Diversifying Income and Ecology with Agroforestry | Tamilanban Farmer

Tamilanban, a retired teacher from Sivagangai district, transformed his two-acre farm after receiving guidance from a Cauvery Calling field expert. Initially cultivating sugarcane on one acre and coconut and banana on the other, Tamilanban sought ways to enhance his income and farm's health. The expert suggested intercropping timber trees, emphasizing the benefits to soil health and water availability. This advice proved transformative.

Six years later, the results are evident. Tamilanban planted various timber species, including mahogany, teak, and rosewood, with mahogany showing the most robust growth. These trees now stand 25 feet tall with a ¾ foot trunk circumference. He estimates each of his 100 trees is worth ₹15,000, projecting a total value of ₹15 lakh on just one acre. This represents a substantial income without factoring in input or security expenses.

Tamilanban emphasizes the significant improvement in soil health. He observes increased earthworm activity and notes how fallen leaves naturally decompose into valuable compost, enriching the soil. The trees have also positively impacted the local water table, addressing previous water scarcity issues in the region.

The expert’s guidance included specific spacing recommendations: 12 feet between timber trees, which has facilitated their healthy growth. After the banana harvest, Tamilanban opted not to replant, allowing the timber trees to flourish. He now cultivates a diverse range of crops, including coconut, timber, and jackfruit, and plans to introduce pepper and nutmeg, further diversifying his income streams.

Tamilanban is deeply grateful for Cauvery Calling’s intervention, which has transformed his farm into a thriving example of sustainable tree-based agriculture. He believes his success demonstrates that farming can be a profitable and fulfilling occupation. The project has not only boosted his income but also improved the local environment, creating a cooler microclimate on his farm. His story is a testament to the positive impact of Cauvery Calling’s work in empowering farmers and promoting ecological balance.
