THE EU SOIL MONITORING LAW:WHY IT MATTERS
Soil is the foundation of life—it sustains our food, climate, and biodiversity. Yet across Europe, soil degradation is accelerating due to pollution, erosion, unsustainable farming, and urban expansion. Today, nearly 60–70% of EU soils are unhealthy, threatening long-term food security and environmental stability.
PROTECTING EUROPE’S SOILS FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
The EU Soil Monitoring Law is a crucial step towards reversing this crisis. It aims to:

Establish a comprehensive soil health monitoring system to track degradation and improve restoration efforts.

Improve soil health and resilience through targeted support and advice to landowners and managers. The law will impose no obligations or costs on farmers themselves.

Increase efforts to avoid the sealing of healthy soils and prioritise already degraded soils when soil is sealed or removed
4
Identify and manage contaminated sites across Europe.
Where Does the Law Stand?
This law is currently moving through the EU legislative process. It passed a key vote on June 4, 2025, in the European Parliament's Environment Committee and now heads towards further votes for its final adoption in the European Parliament and EU Council.
These upcoming votes—expected this Autumn—will be crucial to make the EU's first ever law on soil health a reality. While many support the law, it has also been targeted by deliberate disinformation campaigns trying to derail it. This is why citizen voices matter now more than ever.
