Isha Vidhya students dive into science through hands-on experiments that spark curiosity and deepen understanding. For many, the classroom is their primary space for learning, as academic support at home is limited. These practical experiences make complex concepts clearer and more memorable. In this month’s blog, discover how experiential learning helps our students build a strong foundation in science.

Isha Vidhya’s students actively participate in science experiments at school. This hands-on learning contributes significantly to how clearly they comprehend their lessons – a boon as they seldom get educational assistance at home. In this blog, read how our students develop a clear understanding of science.

Grouping Blood

Class 12 students of Isha Vidhya Dharmapuri went through the rigors of placing a drop of their blood on a slide, adding a reagent, and identifying their blood group based on agglutination. The students found this novel exploration of a generally overlooked process an eye-opener.

Shining Light

To grasp the scattering of light through a colloidal solution (fine particles dispersed in a medium) vis-à-vis a true solution (a clear mixture), Class 9 students of Isha Vidhya Nagercoil directed a powerful beam of light at each solution. They were amazed to see the stark path of light passing through the colloidal solution and enjoyed learning about the Tyndall Effect.

Liquid Nature

Class 5 students of Isha Vidhya Salem mixed a variety of liquids, such as coconut oil, castor oil, groundnut oil, lemon juice, and kerosene, to understand which liquids mix well and which do not. Many were surprised to see some liquids remain unmixed and form layers, and they enjoyed guessing and learning from the activity.

Heated Balloons

To understand how heat transfers through conduction and convection, Class 6 students of Isha Vidhya Cuddalore observed an air-filled balloon held over a lit candle. The balloon burst quickly as the rubber heated up through conduction. They then noted how a water-filled balloon did not burst, as the water absorbed the heat and distributed it through convection.

Power Learning

In the physics lab, Class 9 students of Isha Vidhya Dharmapuri were riveted as they learned to identify and understand the function of key electrical components such as resistors, capacitors, diodes, LEDs, switches, and wires. They then built simple circuits, tested them with multimeters, and reinforced their theoretical concepts—such as Ohm’s Law, voltage, and current.

Mapping a Skeleton

Class 8 students of Isha Vidhya Tuticorin learned about the human skeletal system in the biology lab, referred to videos on the internet, and then used innovative eco-friendly materials to create a model of the human skeleton. This hands-on activity helped them understand the structure, functions, and importance of bones in the human body.

Conducting Metal

Class 8 students of Isha Vidhya Villupuram connected wires to a battery’s terminals and then attached the other ends to a nail and a bulb, which immediately glowed. They were thrilled with the result and learned how the metal nail conducted electricity to complete the circuit.

Water Sense

To understand how the water cycle leads to rain, Class 5 students of Isha Vidhya Tuticorin conducted a simple experiment. They poured hot water into a glass jar and placed a china dish with ice cubes over the jar’s mouth. They then eagerly observed the hot water evaporate, tiny water droplets condensing on the underside of the dish, and heavier drops eventually precipitating to the bottom of the jar.
