The Save Soil 3-Month Farmer Internship program offers a unique opportunity for farmers to live, learn, and practice natural farming methods in Save Soil – Regenerative Revolution (SS-RR)’s model farms. Currently, SS-RR operate two such farms - one in Semmedu village, near the Isha Yoga Center Coimbatore, and the other in Thiruvannamalai.

Farmers join in small batches and spend three months on the farms, where they receive free accommodation and food. Through daily farm work and direct mentorship, they gain hands-on experience in regenerative farming practices. Currently, the participants are expected to know and understand Tamil language.

Many graduates go on to adopt natural farming on their own land, take up leased land, or pursue it as a livelihood. Several also choose to volunteer with the Save Soil movement, carrying the vision of soil revitalization forward.

On Field Education: Natural Farming On-field Training

Model farm:

The Semmedu Model Farm, established in 2020, spans 35 acres divided into five zones (A–E). With predominantly clayey soil, the farm faces challenges like waterlogging, soil compaction, and wildlife intrusion from wild boars and elephants. Zone D is suited mainly for paddy during the monsoon, while the other zones support vegetables, bananas, turmeric, and papaya.

To improve soil health and resilience, the farm is adopting raised beds and shifting from flood to micro-irrigation systems. Situated beside a reservoir, the farm benefits from year-round water access and reliable road connectivity, making it an ideal setting for hands-on farmer training.

The Tiruvannamalai Model Farm, located near Nallavanpalayam village (5 km from Tiruvannamalai town), covers 10 acres of clayey soil. The region has a tropical, semi-arid climate with hot summers reaching 40–42 °C, cooler winters around 16–22 °C, and an average annual rainfall of 1000–1100 mm, mainly during the North-East monsoon.

The farm is irrigated by a 900-foot borewell and an open well. Of the total area, 4 acres are under drip irrigation with vegetables, while the remaining 6 acres grow sugarcane and paddy using open canal irrigation. This setup enables farmers to experience both modern water-efficient systems and traditional irrigation methods, preparing them for varied farming conditions.
