A Legacy of Traditional Agriculture

My name is Muthuchami, and I am a natural farmer from Tirunelveli. My journey in the fields spans over 30 years, rooted in a family that has embraced traditional agriculture for generations. About eight years ago, we reached a significant crossroads and made the decision to transition fully into natural farming. While we initially balanced traditional paddy varieties with commercial seeds, we eventually realized that to truly honor the soil and our heritage, we needed to stop using commercial hybrids. Today, we exclusively cultivate traditional paddy varieties, committed to the purity of 100 percent natural farming methods.

The Challenge of Fair Pricing

While natural farming restored the health of our land, it brought forth a major challenge in marketing and pricing. The government does not accept colored or traditional rice varieties for Civil Supplies, and private traders often only offer the standard rate of 20 rupees per kilogram. This price point is simply not financially viable for the labor and care involved in natural farming. To sustain our operations and achieve true success, we realized we had to secure a premium price. This led us to the vital decision to add value to our paddy before it reached the consumer, ensuring our farming remained profitable and sustainable.

Lessons Learned from Outsourced Processing

Our initial attempt at value addition taught us a difficult but necessary lesson. We took a large volume of harvested paddy to an external rice mill to process it for a specific customer. Unfortunately, the mill owner replaced our high-quality stock with rice processed from someone else's inferior grain. This resulted in a serious complaint from our customer, and the miller refused to return our money or our original stock. This incident was a blow to our reputation and damaged the trust of the exporter who purchased from us. We realized that relying on external processors placed our livelihood and integrity in someone else's hands, prompting us to look for a way to maintain control over our entire production chain.

Adopting the Mini Rice Mill Concept

Through research and conversations with fellow farmers, we discovered the concept of the Mini Rice Mill. This setup is designed for a small budget and can be installed right in a farm building or garden. By having our own mill, we can convert paddy into rice on-site, ensuring that the exact natural product we grow is what reaches the consumer. This independence allows us to hand over our product with absolute self-confidence. After observing successful models in Thanjavur, we invested in our own line of small-budget machinery, which has become the foundation of our self-sufficiency.

Precision Engineering for High-Quality Rice

The processing starts with a Pre-cleaner, which is essential for removing stones, mud, dust, and chaff from the harvested paddy. Following this initial cleaning, the paddy enters the De-husker. This machine uses rubber rollers rotating in opposite directions to gently remove the outer husk. Because the rollers are made of rubber, the nutritious bran layer remains undamaged, which is vital for preserving the medicinal properties and natural colors of varieties like Karuppu Kavuni and Mappillai Samba.

Since the de-husking process usually leaves a small percentage of grains unhusked, we utilize a Separator to segregate the remaining paddy from the rice, ensuring the final output is 100 percent rice. The rice then undergoes grading to separate whole grains from broken ones and filter out any remaining dust or fine particles. Finally, a De-stoner is used to eliminate any larger stones that might have persisted, ensuring the finished product is perfectly clean and ready for the customer’s table.

Financial Sustainability and Independence

While a modern commercial rice mill requires an investment of nearly one crore rupees, a mini setup like ours can be completed for approximately 6 to 7 lakh rupees. This machinery is a necessity for natural farmers who want to face their customers boldly and avoid the risks of malpractice at external mills. For those concerned about the cost, the government now offers a 35 percent subsidy under the PMFME scheme. While this wasn't available when I started my solar-powered unit six years ago, it is a fantastic resource for today's farmers. If a single farmer finds the investment too high, it can be easily managed by a Farmer Producer Company or a small association of two or three farmers working together.

Building Trust Through Total Control

By bringing the processing within our own premises, our product never leaves our control. We now procure paddy from four other local farmers, process it here, and sell it directly to consumers who trust our quality. We have even expanded into making Puttu and Idiyappam flour using our own roaster and pulverizer, allowing us to assure every customer that there are no errors or adulterations in what they buy. This independence is an essential need for every natural farmer. I share these early struggles so that others can take this initiative forward with courage, and we are always ready to guide anyone who wishes to pursue this path to self-sufficiency.
