The Power of the Farmer Producer Company Model

In a traditional corporate structure or society, ownership is often concentrated, and the primary producers rarely see the full benefits of the final sale. However, the Farmer Producer Company (FPO) model changes this dynamic entirely. In our FPO, every natural farmer is a shareholder, making them the collective owners of the company. This ownership structure ensures that the focus remains on the welfare of the farmers rather than external investors.

Economic Benefits: Premium and Withheld Pricing

One of the most significant advantages we offer farmers is a superior pricing structure. For instance, if the conventional market price for tomatoes is 20 rupees per kilogram, we provide our farmers with a premium price of 25 rupees. Furthermore, the profits generated by the company are not withheld for distant shareholders. Instead, we return a portion of the profit to the farmers at the end of the year as a "withheld price." Legally, this type of profit-sharing is unique to the FPO structure, providing a financial safety net that conventional companies cannot offer.

The Genesis of Sahaja Samrudha

The movement began in 1999 when we formed a trust called Sahaja Samrudha. Our goal was to assist conventional farmers in transitioning away from chemical-heavy practices toward natural farming. This initiative was a pioneer in India, eventually leading to the creation of the nation’s first natural farming policy in Karnataka. My partner, Krishna Prasad, and I focused specifically on small farmers - those holding about one hectare or two and a half acres of land. For these individuals, farming is their daily livelihood, making the transition to a sustainable and profitable model absolutely essential.

Supporting the Transition to Natural Farming

Switching from conventional to natural farming is a significant challenge for many because their entire lives have been adjusted to chemical methods. To facilitate this change, we provide comprehensive support that extends beyond the field. We assist farmers with their health, education, livestock management, and crop planning. By demonstrating how their economic condition can improve through natural farming, we have made it easier for smallholders to embrace this sustainable path.

Ensuring Quality and Building Consumer Awareness

A critical part of our mission is proving to consumers that natural farming produces safe, healthy food. We take our produce to laboratories for rigorous testing to ensure it is free from poisonous chemical residues such as DAP, Urea, and pesticides. We then share this data with consumers to build trust. To further drive awareness, we hold large food melas on August 15 and January 26 each year, showcasing natural rice, pulses, and millets. We even distribute calendars that feature recipes and tips on how to prepare these healthy ingredients, such as the proper way to polish and cook millets.

Compensating for the Initial Drop in Yield

It is a reality that when a farmer first moves from chemical to natural farming, production levels may temporarily decrease. For example, an acre that yielded 40 bags of paddy under conventional methods might produce 30 bags during the initial transition to natural farming. To ensure the farmer does not suffer a loss, our FPO provides premium prices that compensate for this lower volume. This financial support has been instrumental in encouraging hundreds of farmers to make the switch permanently.

From a Small Shop to a Nationwide Network

What started as a single small shop in V.V. Puram, Bengaluru, has grown into a massive enterprise. Today, we manage a diverse range of 200 to 250 products, including groceries, pulses, sweeteners like jaggery and sugar, and fresh fruits and vegetables. We realized that for the natural market to thrive, we needed to provide a one-stop shop for consumers. This led us to build a nationwide network, connecting with natural producers across India to ensure we meet the varying food habits of the North and the South.

National Recognition for a Model Movement

Our efforts have not gone unnoticed. In 2018, the Prime Minister highlighted our FPO during his "Mann Ki Baat" address as a model for doubling farmer income. We were honored with VIP invitations to the Republic Day celebrations in Delhi and were invited by the Governor for the special 100th episode of the Prime Minister’s broadcast. This recognition is a testament to the fact that when you do good work for the earth and the community, recognition follows.
