How a Thanjavur homemaker transformed traditional wisdom into a thriving sixty-product business using digital tools and value addition.

The Vision for Natural Self-Care

As I reflected on my journey while connecting with Isha’s Save Soil Movement, I initially questioned if my contributions were significant. In Thanjavur, I operate a business called Vaseegrah Veda, which focuses on producing natural self-care products. My motivation stems from the realization that our daily routines are saturated with chemicals. From the moment we wake up, we use chemical-laden toothpaste, soaps, and shampoos. My goal was to revive the traditional methods used by our ancestors, creating products that are gentle on our bodies while ensuring they do not harm the soil or our water sources.

Starting with the First Step

My venture began on my own land, where I cultivated hibiscus to create a natural shikakai hair wash. As the plants flourished, I found myself with an abundance of flowers and was uncertain about how to utilize them. Through curiosity and learning, I discovered that these flowers could be repurposed into tea, hair packs, and even gulkand. This experience taught me an essential lesson in entrepreneurship: you do not need to know everything before you begin. You simply need to take the first step with the knowledge you currently possess.

The Accessibility of Modern Entrepreneurship

Many people believe that starting a business requires vast financial resources, but the reality is that the capital you have in your pocket can be sufficient to start. The primary requirements are the perseverance to pursue your dreams and a smartphone. Ten years ago, the landscape was different. Purchasing goods or transferring money required physical trips to shops and banks. Today, digital tools have eliminated these barriers, allowing a homemaker like myself to build a business from within the home.

Growth through Consistency and Digital Tools

In 2017, Vaseegrah Veda launched with only four core products: tooth powder, bath powder, shikakai, and hair oil. My introduction to the world of e-commerce came through my son, who assisted me in setting up a website and utilizing WhatsApp for business. Since that first year, I have maintained a consistent presence online, posting updates every single day. This dedication, combined with the immense support of my customers, has allowed my inventory to grow from those original four items to over sixty products today.

Value Addition and Agricultural Support

A key component of my success has been value addition. By seeking assistance from the Department of Agriculture, I secured a subsidy to install a solar tunnel dryer, which enhanced my production capabilities. I believe farmers should look beyond selling raw produce. For example, a tomato farmer can create jams, powders, or pickles, and those with cattle can produce ghee. While these ventures require patience, as orders do not always manifest immediately, the long-term benefits of value addition are substantial.

Building a Supportive Community

Success in business is not just about individual effort but also about community support. We should encourage fellow entrepreneurs by engaging with their digital content and choosing to buy from local neighbors. My business is founded on the concept of "healthy beauty," which prioritizes herbal ingredients over chemical alternatives. Today, I am proud to have extended this knowledge by providing internships to 200 agriculture students. My advice to anyone looking to start their own path is to constantly search for knowledge and embrace learning throughout that search.
