With mahogany trees as the land’s primary species, Periannan's groves have become a thriving ecosystem, yielding impressive returns and showcasing the power of sustainable farming practices. Discover how innovation, hard work, and nature's bounty have enriched his life in ways he never could have imagined.

Periannan, a farmer from Kallakuruchi, Chinna Salem, has a unique story to tell. His journey into the world of tree-based agriculture began 15 years ago, back in 2008, when he and his family decided to deviate from the traditional path of farming. Their 7-acre land, which had once been accustomed to growing sugarcane, turmeric, and plantains, was about to undergo a remarkable transformation.
Opting for tree-based agriculture, they chose to cultivate mahogany trees. On one acre, they carefully planted 100 saplings, allowing each tree ample space to flourish. These trees soon became an integral part of their lives, growing and thriving over the years.

Within the lush mahogany forest, Periannan and his family decided to introduce diversity by cultivating intercrops of sugarcane, turmeric, and plantains within the 2.5 acres of mahogany trees. The land was not only revived but had begun to thrive, with the mahogany trees forming a sturdy backdrop to a flourishing ecosystem.
Their journey took yet another exciting turn three years ago when they decided to add a touch of sweetness to their lands with jackfruit. Encouraged by the success, they expanded their jackfruit crop, carefully planting them in the spaces between the mahogany trees. Mahogany, the star of their agricultural ensemble, required minimal labor yet rewarded them with substantial value: each tree is now valued at Rs. 1000. Their grove is currently estimated to be worth a remarkable Rs. 20 to 25 lakhs.
Not stopping there, they have introduced pepper into the mahogany plantations, a crop that helps to ensure their grove's longevity. Across another 4-acre plot of land, they have embraced the same approach, focusing on alternate crops. The results have been staggering, with a tenfold increase in revenue compared to their previous cultivation methods.
Periannan's journey is a testament to the transformative power of innovation, hard work, and the beauty of nature. He and his family are deeply grateful for the profound changes in their lives, and they eagerly anticipate many more years of sustainable farming.
Their story is a reminder of the potential for greener, more prosperous futures, and they express their heartfelt appreciation to all who have been a part of their incredible farming journey.
