Many Isha Vidhya alumni grew up seeing their parents struggle financially, which drove them to pursue education as a path to stability. In this month’s blog, they share how their careers reflect that journey towards independence and a better life.

Most of Isha Vidhya’s  alumni were mute witnesses to their parents' efforts to make ends meet. Doing well academically was imperative to ensure they landed a secure job and improved their life situation.

Some of the alumni speak about where they work and how they spent their first salary.

“I’m an IT Technical Specialist at IBM, solving diverse technical challenges every day. I enjoy analyzing problems, finding solutions, collaborating with teams, learning new technologies, and continuously improving my skills.

I gifted my parents something special with my first salary as a token of gratitude for their support and sacrifices. It was my way of showing my appreciation and making them feel proud.”

“My work as a Process Executive at Cognizant in Claims Adjudication requires attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong process knowledge while reviewing and processing insurance claims. I enjoy the responsibility as it requires accuracy and accountability, which keeps me motivated to perform consistently.

Spending my first salary to buy gifts and paying all the bills for the family made me feel euphoric, as it was the first time I contributed financially.”

“I am an Optometrist at Garnett Memorial Eye Hospital and carry out ocular health assessments. Interacting and handling patients gives me immense joy. Communicating with strangers confidently comes easily to me, as I was a school tour guide at Isha Vidhya.

Besides saving some of my first salary, I bought my parents clothes and gifted my mother a mobile phone. Earning has taught me to spend money wisely.”

“As a Finance Executive in Accounts Receivables at Wipro, what I like about my job is the sense of ownership over the order-to-cash process, problem-solving through customer coordination, and the impact my work has on improving the cash flow and business performance.

I bought my mother a gift with my first salary. Becoming financially independent has made me confident, responsible, and a more disciplined and goal-oriented person.”

“I am a System Engineer at Demeter Systems Private Limited. I work in automation and development, and test automation machines with LabVIEW software. Coding and attending to debugging issues while testing machines keeps me on my toes and helps me continuously improve my technical skills.

I had planned to donate my first salary to Isha Vidhya, but it couldn’t happen then, so I donated it later on my birthday.”

“I recently started working as a Data Analyst at Dentsu Global Services after completing B.Sc. in Computer Science. Applying what I learned in college and learning new software skills at work is fulfilling.

I’m a first-generation graduate, so my parents are thrilled with my job placement. I happily gave my first salary to them, and feel gratified that I can support my family and buy things for them.”

“I am a Hi-Tech Lab Administrator cum Instructor at Panchayat Union Middle School, and also take care of the computer lab. I find it satisfying to teach students basic computer skills and chose to work here as it is a secure government job.

I presented my first salary to my mother, and continue to support my family. Financial independence helps me attend to my needs, and it has enhanced my confidence."
