From Lemons to Legacy: A Farmer's Journey to Abundance with Cauvery Calling

Sithalakshmi, a farmer from Sivakasi Tenkasi district, found herself facing a familiar challenge - a lack of labor for her 25-acre farm. But instead of giving up, she decided to transform her land.

"We were getting good income from lemons," Sithalakshmi shares, "but finding help was difficult." This led her to seek Isha's Cauvery Calling program, a beacon of hope for a more sustainable future.

Embracing Tree-Based Abundance

Cauvery Calling's experts recommended tree-based agriculture, a solution that resonated with Sithalakshmi's vision. "They came and checked the soil, suggesting Teak, Mahogany, Red Sandalwood, and Sandalwood trees," she explains. This diverse mix promised long-term benefits while addressing immediate needs.

Intercropping for Immediate Impact

Sithalakshmi didn't wait for the trees to mature. She cleverly employed intercropping, a technique that utilizes space between trees for additional crops. "We planted black urad lentils," she says, "followed by jasmine, Mullai plants, and vegetables like tomatoes, ladyfingers, and brinjals." This strategy ensured steady income while the trees flourished.

Tree-based agriculture Benefits

Sithalakshmi's foresight didn't stop there. "We also have 7 acres of land with three-year-old trees - a future investment," she reveals. Additionally, pepper vines, known for their high value, were strategically incorporated. "Pepper is a cash-rich crop, so we've grown trees for them," she explains.

Beyond Income: A Multi-Layered Ecosystem

This farm isn't just about financial gain. Sithalakshmi understands the importance of diversity. "We have coconut trees, gooseberry, pomegranate, jackfruit, and mango trees as intercrops," she explains, highlighting the creation of a thriving ecosystem.

A Legacy of Sustainability

Sithalakshmi's dedication extends beyond herself. "These trees are good savings," she affirms, "benefiting our grandchildren and providing a pension for our children in their old age." Her commitment inspires others to follow suit, ensuring a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Editor's Note: Sithalakshmi's story is a testament to the transformative power of Cauvery Calling. Together, we can create a world where farms are not just sources of income, but vibrant ecosystems that nourish the land and the people who tend it.
