The 2023 plantation season for Cauvery Calling received a major kick-start with our Mega Jackfruit Festival / Farmer Training Program and the World Environment Day Plantation Drive. Read on for more about these successful events, some remarkable donation campaign stories, and glimpses of farmers sharing their recipes for success. Project updates as of June 2023: a) Enabled the plantation of 90 million trees, b) Helped 176,000 farmers transition to tree-based agriculture.

With over 12,500 farmer queries answered in the past year, the Cauvery Calling Helpline team is now supporting over 30,300 farmers through WhatsApp groups that broadcast event updates and technical information. Kendagandaswamy, a farmer in Mysuru, points out that the Cauvery River is a source of water for two states, and although people may have differences amongst themselves, the river is impartial. He applauds how #CauveryCalling is using technology to inspire farmers to adopt tree-based farming.

Cauvery Calling hosted a Mega Jackfruit Festival in Panruti welcoming over 2,000 farmers and several agricultural experts to share their insights. The topics covered included jackfruit cultivation, tree-based agriculture, value-addition, and strategies on marketing. Pioneer farmer Mr. Haridoss highlighted the remarkable benefits of jackfruit cultivation - from food and health to economy and livelihood. Dr. Jaganmohan shared creative methods for utilizing every part of a jackfruit, its many uses, and its potential in combating diseases like diabetes and cancer. Let us celebrate the mighty jackfruit, the pride of our land!

Kannan, an IT professional living in Saudi Arabia, has been donating 1,000 trees every month since Cauvery Calling started in September 2019. He has donated 43,000 trees so far. Individuals like Kannan are an inspiration to us, and we bow down to their commitment. The efforts to save Cauvery from drying up, increase soil richness, and ensure a rise in farmers’ income can only be successful when everyone takes up this movement as their own.

Celebrating World Environment Day with farmers
Events

Farmers in Tamil Nadu celebrated #WorldEnvironmentday on 5 June by planting saplings in their agricultural lands. The celebration aimed to raise environmental awareness across the world. On this day, 105 farmers planted over 149,000 trees in 37 districts across Tamil Nadu.

Green Chikkaballapura tree plantation drive launched on #WorldEnvironmentDay
Events

“Hasiru Chikkaballapura” or Green Chikkaballapura tree plantation drive was launched on #WorldEnvironmentDay this year in 22 villages around Sadhguru Sannidhi, Bengaluru. In this plantation drive, 10,000 high-quality grafted fruit saplings were distributed wherein each household received up to 5 saplings and the know-how to grow them. These saplings will yield fruit in 3 years' time.

A worthy teak harvesting experience!

Manoharan, a farmer from Kallampatti in Pattukottai, shares that his 30-acre coconut grove had 300 teak trees, aged 40 years. Of these, he sold eight trees to timber vendors to earn Rs. 1,250,000. He also sold 15 more trees to meet the demands of local people and earned an additonal Rs. 1,000,000.
