How Two-Acre Farm Became a Prosperous Food Forest

On just two acres, Poovendran Anna transformed his land into a thriving food forest with timber, fruit, and coconut trees. Guided by tree-based farming practices learned through Cauvery Calling, he created year-round income while investing in the future of his family and the health of his soil.

When I looked at my two-acre piece of land, I wanted to build something that would beat any chance of poverty—a farm that would give back constantly. So, I decided to practice multi-crop, tree-based agriculture.
I started by thinking about the long-term future. I planted 600 Manjal Kadambu (Yellow Teek) trees in a 12-by-12 grid across my land. These are high-quality timber trees. I know they will take 20 to 30 years to fully mature, but I planted them with a clear vision: they are a secure investment and an inheritance for my children and the generations to come. All of them are growing beautifully and looking very healthy right now.
But I couldn't just wait decades for a harvest, so I made sure not to leave a single inch of empty space. In the borders and outer edges of my land, I lined up coconut trees. In the spaces right between the timber trees, I planted banana trees.

Then, to ensure a regular, everyday income, I turned to fruits. Right in the center spaces of my 12-by-12 timber grid, I intercropped 150 guava trees and 150 papaya trees.
The rewards came quickly. By the sixth month, my papaya trees started flowering, and they have been yielding heavily for about a year and a half now. I sell these organic fruits directly from my farm to local buyers for ₹60 a kilo, which brings me a solid annual income of around ₹1.5 Lakhs from papayas alone. My guava trees have been just as incredible; they give me a harvest across two or even three seasons in a year. Every single month, I harvest about 240 to 250 kilograms of guavas, adding another ₹80,000 to ₹1 Lakh to my annual income.
None of this happened by accident. I learned the core of this tree-based farming from Isha's Cauvery Calling movement. They guided me step-by-step on how to design a farm centered around trees. They taught me which crops can comfortably grow in the shade of another, how to maximize my profits from the same plot, and even how the falling leaves and mulch from different trees decay to naturally nourish the soil.
Thanks to that training, I learned exactly what to plant, in what season, and how to utilize the land without leaving gaps. Today, I am managing my food forest with absolute clarity and seeing the rewards every single day.
